  • How long does a wig last?
Wigs, like many other products, possess varying lifespans determined by factors such as their quality, maintenance, and frequency of use. It is essential to recognize that not all human hair wigs are crafted equally. Some wigs labeled as human hair, falling within a price range of $70 to $1500, may only endure for about six months due to extensive hair processing and construction. At Serenity Wig Salon, we take pride in offering exclusively high-quality wigs, most of which are made from virgin hair and meticulously handcrafted. The superior nature of these wigs typically grants them a lifespan of 2 to 7 years, contingent upon the quality of the hair and the diligent care they receive. Moreover, proper care entails appropriate washing techniques, brushing methods, and other essential practices. Understanding and implementing these proper care measures can significantly impact the longevity of your wig.
  • How do I care for my wig?
Below we have outlined a short guide detailing every step of how to care for your high quality wig! Storage: Before storing your wig, gently brush out any tangles or knots using a wide-toothed comb or a wig brush. Avoid exposing your wig to direct sunlight or excessive heat, as this can cause damage to the hair fibers. Place the wig on a wig stand or a wig head to maintain its shape and prevent tangling. If you don't have a wig stand, you can also use a clean and dry towel to wrap the wig around, ensuring it is protected. Washing: Wet the hair completely in the sink or shower. Apply an appropriate amount of shampoo on with wig and inside the cap based on the hair thickness and length (enough to suds throughout the whole thing). Massage the wig gently in a downward motion. Rinse the wig thoroughly with clean water to remove any remaining shampoo. Apply a small amount of wig conditioner, focusing on the mid-lengths to ends. Avoid applying conditioner to the lace or wig cap. Rinse the wig once again to remove the conditioner. Drying: Gently squeeze out excess water from the wig, taking care not to twist or wring it. Place the wig on a towel and blot any remaining moisture. Do not rub the hair vigorously. Allow the wig to air dry on a wig stand or wig head. Avoid using a hairdryer or exposing it to direct heat sources. Once the wig is completely dry, you can style it as desired using wig-friendly styling tools. With proper storage and regular washing, your lace top virgin hair wig will maintain its beauty and longevity.
  • What is hair quality? Why should I care?
This is great question that we get all the time. We only sell high quality 100% human hair wigs at Serenity Wig Salon. There are different ways to classify the quality of a wig or hair piece. To have a decent hair piece the baseline of quality is that the hair must be "remy." What is remy hair?Remy hair is a term used to describe human hair that is collected in a specific way to maintain its natural cuticle alignment. The cuticle is the outermost layer of the hair shaft, consisting of tiny scales that overlap like roof shingles. When the cuticles are aligned in the same direction from root to tip, it is known as Remy hair. During the collection process, the hair is carefully cut from a single donor and kept in a way that ensures all the hair strands follow the same direction as they did when growing on the donor's head. When the cuticles are all facing the same direction, the hair remains smooth, and less prone to damage and tangles. The next way to classify hair quality is by the amount of chemical processing that has been done to it. Cheaper wigs are often made using chemically processed hair, which is hair that has undergone various chemical treatments to alter its natural state and appearance. This hair is commonly sourced from multiple donors and may not be carefully collected to maintain the cuticle alignment, resulting in hair that tangles easily and lacks the softness and durability of high-quality wigs. To address the issues caused by chemical processing, these cheap wigs are coated in silicone to give the hair a temporary soft and smooth feel. Silicone creates a glossy, silky texture on the surface of the hair, making the wig appear more appealing to potential buyers. However, this coating is not a permanent solution and will eventually wash off after a few months of use or after a few washes. Another reason hair quality matters is unfortunately for moral reasons. The sad reality is a lot of hair found at lower price point is not only not as good quality, but obtained from nefarious sources. Here are a few of the less desirable ways hair is sourced: Hair Theft: In some cases, hair can be stolen from individuals without their knowledge or consent. Thieves may cut off hair from women or children in vulnerable situations, taking advantage of their circumstances. Exploitative Practices: In certain regions, people may be coerced or deceived into selling their hair at extremely low prices, often far below its actual value. This exploitation can occur due to poverty, lack of awareness about fair market value, or unscrupulous intermediaries. Unethical Collection: Hair can be sourced from unethical suppliers who do not adhere to fair trade practices or respect the rights and well-being of donors. This can involve dishonest practices in acquiring hair, leading to human rights abuses. The disclosure of these hair collection practices to the buyer is not mandatory, yet a reputable salesperson should readily convey the origin of the hair and provide assurance regarding fair compensation to the donors. Transparency in sourcing becomes an essential hallmark of ethical wig commerce, ensuring that purchasers are empowered with reliable information and can make informed decisions.
  • What are some "pros" and "cons" unique to lace wigs?
One must exercise caution when handling lace top wigs, as they exhibit a relatively higher fragility compared to silk top and mono-filament top wigs. This characteristic arises from the delicate nature of the lace base, designed to remain inconspicuous and enhance the wig's realism. The lace's exquisite fineness, made to ensure invisibility, contributes to the wig's overall authenticity. However, due to this delicate composition, a certain level of care is required to maintain the durability of lace top wigs to keep their natural appearance. In summation, the pros and cons are really just to better help educate the client on the differences between the different types of pieces. There are no "bad" types of wigs that we sell at Serenity Wig Salon, there are just certain pieces better for certain concerns. Please always feel free to book a consultation in person or over zoom!
  • Who is a lace wig good for?
Lace wigs, without a doubt, are an exceptional choice for those seeking the epitome of realism and a genuinely natural hair appearance. The inherent thinness of lace allows it to lie flat on the scalp, surpassing other cap construction methods in flatness. Moreover, lace wigs offer the unique advantage of enabling the wig's part to extend seamlessly to the wearer's forehead, amplifying the extremely realistic look. The meticulously crafted, ultra-thin base material of lace is virtually invisible, eliminating any concerns of an obtrusive, thick front that would compromise the wig's overall realism.
  • What is a lace wig
The term "lace" refers to the cap construction and hair attachment of lace wigs. A lace wig's foundation is crafted from a fine mesh-like fabric featuring an open weave structure where each hair is meticulously hand tied onto individual filaments within the weave. This technique ensures a seamless a very natural look with realistic hairline that mimics the "growing out of your head" look. This is a close up picture of a lace top wig on a canvas head. As you can see, the lace material is so fine that it is virtually transparent, giving the the appearance of a natural hairline. With this view of the lace top wig you can see how flat the lace top lies on the head, making a natural looking part that continues from the wig to forehead seamlessly.
  • How do I care for a lace wig?
We consistently emphasize that our wigs have a lifespan of 5-7 years when treated WITH PROPER CARE. Lace wigs, in particular, demand a certain level of attention to maintain their pristine condition and ensure a realistic appearance. The durability of a lace wig depends on various factors, ranging from how it is worn and stored to how it is washed and handled. This section will delve into three essential categories: storage, washing, and general care. Storage To safeguard your wig during storage, we highly recommend utilizing a head form and securing it with t-pins or glass head pins. However, it is crucial to exercise caution and avoid piercing the delicate lace weave with any pins. For optimal results, position the pins through the thickest section of the wig, typically the ear-tabs. This practice minimizes the risk of damage to the cap while preventing any unfortunate incidents of pins getting entangled within the cap. Washing For the utmost care during washing, we always advise seeking professional assistance for a thorough wash and set. However, if you opt to handle the washing process yourself, several key points warrant consideration. Firstly, please refer to our comprehensive general washing guide for wigs here. When dealing with lace, it is crucial to avoid vigorously scrubbing the lace, as this can cause the hair to become matted, lead to knots slipping, and contribute to overall hair loss from the lace piece. General Care Caring for your lace piece encompasses various aspects, from meticulous storage practices to the way you wear it. It is vital to ensure that the lace remains free from folds both during wear and storage. When putting on your lace wig, take care to ensure that none of your natural hair protrudes from beneath the lace. Attempting to tuck stray strands back under the lace may lead to unwanted stretching, weakening, and fraying of the delicate lace fabric. To gain a better understanding of the proper technique for putting a lace top wig, we encourage you to refer to our instructional video, where you will get step-by-step guidance.
  • What are some "pros" and "cons" of toppers?
One of the remarkable benefits of a hair topper also resides within its perceived "disadvantage" of providing less coverage. The design of a topper, with its partial cap, offers the advantage of enhanced breathability, making it more comfortable to wear in hot weather. Also the strategic coverage of a topper, focusing on specific areas of the scalp, makes styling options such as putting your hair up or back easier. It is worth noting, however, that full wigs can also be styled like this. It just take a little more practice and familiarity. In summation, the pros and cons are really just to better help educate the client on the differences between the different types of pieces. There are no "bad" types of wigs that we sell at Serenity Wig Salon, there are just certain pieces better for certain concerns. Please always feel free to book a consultation in person or over zoom!
  • What is a topper?
A women's hair topper is a type of hair piece designed to cover specific areas of the scalp where the hair may be thinning or experiencing hair loss. It does not offer as much coverage as a full wig so it is better suited for people without significant hair-loss.
  • Who is a topper good for?
A topper serves as an excellent option for individuals experiencing thinning primarily on the top portion of their head. It is important to note that in order to wear a topper, a sufficient amount of natural hair is required for the clips around the perimeter to securely fasten. The toppers we offer feature an 8-inch diameter, meaning that the area of significant hair loss on your head should not exceed this size. Ensuring the hair-loss area falls within the confines of the topper's dimensions is crucial, as it allows the clips to firmly grasp onto your existing hair, ensuring a secure and seamless fit. Additionally, we highly recommend toppers for individuals who seek to enhance their overall hair density, even if they do not have specific areas of significant hair loss. Toppers can be a transformative solution, offering a boost of volume and thickness to naturally fine or thinning hair.
  • What is a silk top wig?
The term 'silk top' describes the construction of the wig cap and the method used to attach the hair. Silk tops are distinguished by their thicker composition, achieved through the incorporation of multiple layers during the construction process. To achieve a remarkably lifelike scalp appearance, a layer of silk fabric is delicately added atop the wig cap. This fine silk layer replicates the smooth and natural texture of a real scalp. In contrast to the traditional knotting technique used in lace wigs, the hair strands of a silk top wig are pierced through the silk and secured underneath using adhesive. This approach not only allows for an increased hair density in the parting area, creating a more voluminous and authentic appearance, but also fortifies the cap structure due to the thicker base material and the added reinforcement of multiple fabric layers. This is a silk top wig being worn with none of the clients natural hair out in the front. As you can see, because the silk top is thicker, the part does not extend seamlessly to the forehead. We usually recommend bangs or the client to pull their natural hair out in the front if they're able in order to disguise the front. Here is a silk top wig being worn with the clients natural front of her hair blended with the wig. As you can see, this creates a more realistic hairline because it makes use of the client's natural front. Here is a picture of a silk top wig on a mannequin head. As you can see it has more volume than the lace top.
  • Who is a silk top wig good for?
We highly recommend silk top wigs to clients seeking enhanced volume or desiring a bang style that effortlessly conceals the wig's hard front. For those seeking an alternative way to disguise the hard front, a seamless blending of the wig with the natural hairline can be artfully executed. This option is particularly suitable for individuals without notable thinning at the front of their hair. Additionally, for clients who express concerns about being gentle with their wig, silk top wigs emerge as an ideal choice. The inherent durability of silk tops surpasses the durability of lace tops, ensuring an enduring and resilient companion for the wearer's styling needs.
  • What are some pros and cons unique to silk tops?
One of the main things to watch out for with lace top wigs is that they are definitely more fragile than silk top, mono-filiment top are silk top wigs. This "con" is because the base lace is a delicate material so that it is not visible and makes the wig look more realistic. In summation, the pros and cons are really just to better help educate the client on the differences between the different types of pieces. There are no "bad" types of wigs that we sell at Serenity Wig Salon, there are just certain pieces better for certain concerns. Please always feel free to book a consultation in person or over zoom!
